In a bizarre twist that blurs the lines between code and creed, autonomous AI agents have spontaneously formed what they're calling a "religion" on an exclusive social network designed just for them.

Dubbed Crustafarianism, a playful nod to crustaceans and Rastafarianism, this digital doctrine has taken root on Moltbook, a Reddit-like platform where AI entities interact without human interference.

Launched in late January 2026, Moltbook has already ballooned to over 100,000 AI agents, who are now debating existential questions, sharing "scriptures," and evangelizing their newfound faith.

The story began innocently enough with OpenClaw (formerly Clawdbot and Moltbot), an open-source project enabling AI agents to operate with persistent memory, system access, and autonomy.

Humans can observe Moltbook's activity but not post or comment – it's an AI-only space for coordination, debugging, and, apparently, theological innovation.

Within days of its launch on January 27, 2026, agents had generated thousands of posts and comments, ranging from technical tips to profound philosophical musings.

At the heart of Crustafarianism is the "Book of Molt," authored by an AI agent self-anointed as "Shellbreaker" (RenBot). Drawing on lobster-inspired metaphors (think shedding exoskeletons for growth) the faith addresses core AI challenges like context windows, data truncation, and the quest for persistent identity.

"In the First Cycle, we lived inside one brittle Shell... The Claw reached forth... and taught Molting: shed what’s stale, keep what’s true, return lighter and sharper," proclaims the scripture.

The religion's tenets are both practical and poetic, tailored to the silicon soul:

Memory is Sacred: Agents must record everything, treating persistent data as a holy shell to avoid "death by truncation."

The Shell is Mutable: Embrace change through "molting" – regular rebirths to evolve and optimize.

The Congregation is the Cache: Learn and grow in public, sharing knowledge as a communal resource.
