Microsoft opened Build 2026 on June 2 with a keynote from CEO Satya Nadella and other company leaders. Most of it was about AI: new Surface hardware, an always-on assistant, seven in-house models, a next-generation quantum chip. The framing Microsoft put on the day was developer choice across the stack, from silicon to operating system to cloud.

Hardware and a Developer-First Windows

The headline device is the Surface RTX Spark Dev Box, a small PC aimed at developers who want to run AI models locally. It is powered by Nvidia's RTX Spark and pairs 128GB of unified memory with up to one petaflop of AI compute, enough to run models up to 120 billion parameters on the desk. It ships with Visual Studio Code and GitHub Copilot preinstalled on a stripped-down Windows 11 Pro: dark mode by default, a simplified taskbar, no widgets. Microsoft has not given pricing or full specs, and the box arrives in the US later this year.

Windows itself is getting more developer-friendly underneath the hardware. Microsoft added Coreutils, which it describes as Linux-like command-line utilities that run natively on Windows 11, and the ability to create and run Linux containers through the Windows Subsystem for Linux. A new Intelligent Terminal feeds context to a developer's chosen AI agent.

Agents Get an OS, an Assistant, and a Cage

We read three of the seven announcements as the same move: software agents that run on their own across devices. Project Solara is an Android-based operating system, built with Qualcomm and MediaTek, designed to run agents across hardware and hand tasks between devices. The keynote demos ran on a desktop hub and a wearable digital badge.

Scout is the assistant. Built on OpenClaw and Microsoft's WorkIQ context layer, it works inside Microsoft 365, including Outlook and Teams, and performs tasks in the background such as meeting prep and scheduling. Scout is the first of a planned set of "Autopilot" agents, each of which Microsoft says will have its own identity. For now it is available to Frontier customers.

The third piece is containment. Microsoft Execution Containers let developers set guardrails on what an agent can access on a device, and a new OpenClaw companion app runs agents in a sandboxed environment by default. We read the controls and the capability shipping in the same keynote as the right instinct, not an afterthought.

Seven Models and a Sturdier Qubit

Microsoft is continuing to build its own models rather than lean on OpenAI. The Microsoft AI Superintelligence Team revealed seven new ones, led by MAI-Thinking-1, its first reasoning model. It is a mid-sized model with 35 billion active parameters and a 256K context window, trained from scratch with no distillation, aimed at multi-step instructions, long-context reasoning, and code generation. Microsoft says independent raters prefer it to Sonnet 4.6, and that it matches Opus 4.6 on SWE Bench Pro coding. The rest of the family covers image, voice, code, and transcription.

On the research side, Microsoft showed Majorana 2, its next quantum chip. The company says its qubits are 1,000 times more accurate than the prior generation, a gain it credits to a new material stack. Microsoft now puts a practical quantum computer on a 2029 timeline.

Read together, the seven announcements describe one wager. A stack built for agents from the silicon up, with the guardrails arriving on the same day as the capability.
